Family Lawyer & Accredited Family Mediator
Hello, my name is Jennifer.
I have been advocating for family law clients since 2007, in various settings from legal aid clinics to prominent boutique family law firms in York Region. I believe in promoting settlement and reducing conflict wherever possible. I was called to the bar in Ontario in 2008 and added collaborative practice to my work in 2009. I became accredited in family mediation in 2014.
In addition to my work in private practice, I have been a Duty Counsel and Advice Counsel lawyer at the Newmarket Courthouse since 2015, where I give self-represented people quick and useful advice regarding their family law issues with the help of funding by Legal Aid Ontario.
I am now offering family law advice and strategy sessions on an "unbundled" or "limited scope" basis outside of the courthouse, with no long-term retainers and no hidden fees.
Here's why...
For most of my years in practice, I represented family law clients through traditional lawyer retainers and legal aid certificates. I have helped ex-spouses and ex-partners go from being unable to look at each other, to communicating in a neutral or positive manner. I have represented clients before judges in courtrooms across southern Ontario, from downtown Toronto to Bracebridge, from Kitchener to Belleville, and almost every courthouse in between.
I have helped clients negotiate, mediate, and settle family law disputes ranging from standard parenting arrangements to possible child abduction cases, and from dividing the pots and pans to million-dollar business and pension assets. But lawyers' fees add up very quickly, and these types of long-term, on-going files are extremely stressful for everyone involved. Not everyone can afford to have a lawyer hold their hand through the whole process. Not everyone wants it, or needs it.
I kept dreaming about how I could make things easier, cheaper, and better for regular people facing family law issues.
What I dreamt about bringing to life was this: a service that offers hourly-based consultations for people who need legal advice, without asking for a huge retainer just to open their file. A service that is easy to book, with a lawyer who listens to clients and offers spot-on advice at a fair price.
A service where the client takes the lead in his or her own case, and the lawyer is there with information, advice, and support as the client needs it.
So here I am, bringing this dream to life. Let's make it happen.
I look forward to working with you.
Jennifer
