What We Do
Big Changes. Big Questions. Where do you start when seeking legal advice and information?
With so much information out there, it helps to have someone who can set you on the right path.
At Lau Law, we are currently offering Family Law Consultations and Hourly Advice in all aspects of family law to help you move forward with your family law matter, including issues such as custody and access, child and spousal support, and property division and equalization.
We can provide guidance regarding negotiation strategy, family court rules and procedure, as well as methods for resolving family disputes without going to court, based on years of experience offering a wide range of services in family law, family mediation, and wills/estates, as well as independent legal advice, assisted negotiation, and drafting services for clients whose cases did not require full legal representation. At this time, we are offering consultation services only.
Legal advice is important when your core concerns are at stake. We offer flat rates for hourly advice and operate on a pay-as-you-go basis, with no long-term on-going retainers. We are not accepting legal aid certificates at this time. Please feel free to contact us for more information regarding payment options.
Option 1: Advice Consultation for One
Personalized and Confidential Advice.
In an Advice Consultation for One, you will meet with Jennifer and we focus on your specific concerns and end goals. You may have concerns that differ from those of your partner or ex-partner, and we address these differences along with your rights and obligations under Ontario family law. We can discuss and help develop strategies for moving forward toward settlement.
Where court is required or a court matter is already started, Jennifer can explain and navigate the detailed rules of family court, and provide helpful tips on completing court forms, booking court appearances, keeping a matter moving forward, and presenting your case in front of a Judge.
After your Consultation, we may be able to assist you with further advice on an appointment-only, hourly-rate basis, with no on-going retainer required.
Option 2: Neutral Consultation for Two
Start on Level Ground.
In a Neutral Consultation for Two, you and your partner or ex-partner will meet together with Jennifer for a basic review of family law and an overview of several methods of resolving your matter. These may range from simple "kitchen table" negotiation to mediation, collaborative family practice, or family court. We set it out plainly for both people at once.
Jennifer can answer questions regarding your rights and obligations under Ontario family law and point out areas in which you may find common ground where none seemed possible, or assist in exploring avenues for resolution where the prospect may have seemed daunting before.
After your Consultation, we may be able to meet with you again to provide additional information or clarifications on an appointment-only, hourly-rate basis, with no on-going retainer required.
